Irish art auctions begin at the end of September with sales scheduled in Dublin and London. Among the highlights at Whyte’s of Dublin on October 2, is this portrait of Lady Barron Tottie by Sir John Lavery (1856-1941).

Born in Boston, the sitter was the daughter of Captain Francis Barron Blake of the US Navy. She married William Harald Tottie, son of a Swedish Consul, who become a merchant banker in Shanghai.

Lavery painted her in 1905, inspired by the use of black in portraits by Whistler and Velázquez. The signed 3ft 8in x 2ft 10in (1.12m x 86cm) oil on canvas has been privately consigned and bears a 1993 Art Museum of the America’s exhibition label on reverse.
