Standing 9½x 11½in (24 x 29cm), the screen, with silver mounts and shibayama inlay, was decorated with figures, fish, birds and landscapes and, to the reverse, with monkeys.

Ivory remains a contentious subject but appears as yet not an insurmountable problem in salerooms – the screen sold to a UK collector bang on the mid-estimate at £10,000.
