Offered at Laidlaw Auctioneers (17.5% buyer’s premium) in Carlisle on September 30, the robe, with its country garden theme of picket fences, oaks and stylised blossoms, was pitched at £1000-2000.
A costly piece when new, it had been in the family ever since.
“It could have been in a Georgian press for the last 200 years,” said auctioneer Paul Laidlaw, commenting on its condition. It sold to a private buyer at £3100.
Other highlights of a wide-ranging sale included a 1923 Royal Worcester blush ivory vase and a George III coloured twist wine glass. The 12in (31cm) tall oblate form vase was painted by Harry Davis with moorland sheep to one side and cattle wading in a loch to the other and took a double-estimate £5600.
The trumpet-form, 6¼in (15.5cm) tall wine glass with an opaque white corkscrew stem edged in blue trebled the mid-estimate selling at £2900.
