An early study of a seated dancer in a yellow tutu by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) will be offered for sale at Lawrences of Crewkerne in Somerset on October 13.
The 22 x 14in (56 x 35.5cm) signed, charcoal and coloured pastel work is thought to date c.1895-1905 and shows the French influence of Edgar Degas.
“Although Peploe produced sketches in oil, surviving works on paper are less common and usually take the form of quick ideas or simple studies”, according to the auction house. “Fully resolved signed pastels are rarer still and it would seem that fewer than half a dozen such examples have surfaced at auction in the last 25 years.”
The study was gifted from the artist to his sister-in-law and has remained in the family since then. Estimate £8000-12,000.

A large porcelain bowl by Edmund de Waal (b.1964) will feature in Adam Partridge’s Design sale in Cheshire on October 13. The 14½in (37cm) wide bowl has a copper red and manganese rim and was gifted to the artist’s mother-in-law in 1994.
Estimate £4500-6500.

Old Master dealer Mark Weiss is temporarily opening his gallery doors to modern art with a selling exhibition of paintings by his father, Ivor Weiss (1919-86). The show will run until October 20 at The Weiss Gallery in Jermyn Street, London.
Works range from landscapes to religious paintings depicting Jewish ritual recalled from the artist’s upbringing in London’s East End. During his lifetime, Weiss exhibited widely in England and North America, and his works are included in a number of private and public collections, including London’s Ben Uri Gallery. This 3 x 4ft (91cm x 1.22m) oil on canvas titled Wivenhoe Creek from 1966 is priced at £15,000.
