Though he travelled to Italy to study, he returned to Scotland to work for the Duke of Gordon, a Jacobite, and completed a ceiling painting of Gordon Castle.

In 1738, he painted portraits of three of Gordon’s children: Charles, Lewis and Catherine. Today, the portraits of the two boys hang in the National Portrait Galleries of Scotland. The painting of their sister Catherine, however, is now on offer at the Fine Art Society Edinburgh.

She is shown, aged 14, on a canvas measuring 2ft 6in x 2ft 1in (76 x 64cm).

The painting is included in the gallery’s ongoing exhibition Scottish Portraits 1700-1950 (until October 21), priced at £7500. This show features painters who lived and worked in Scotland, including works by Sir David Wilkie, William Kidd, Sir Henry Raeburn and David Scott.
