Like his contemporaries Ferdinand Preiss and Demetre Chiparus, the Austrian sculptor Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950) is best known for his delicate bronze and ivory figurine creations of the Art Deco period.

This patinated bronze example pictured above, titled Harem Dancer, is estimated at £5000-7000 in Sworders’ 20th Century Decorative Art & Design sale on October 10 in Stansted Mountfitchet. It measures 18in (45cm) high and comes on an onyx base.

An oil painting by the Russian artist Vasili Vereshchagin (1842-1904) will star in Bentley’s sale in Cranbrook, Kent, on October 7, estimated at £12,000-18,000.

The 12½ x 11in (32 x 29cm) portrait of a bearded Russian bears a stamp for the ‘Vassili Verestchagin Collection sale’ held in November 1891 at the American Art Galleries in New York.

A piece of Arts & Crafts furniture made by the Sidney Barnsley workshop with a deep provenance stars at Lawrences of Crewkerne on October 12.

The oak settee, which measures 7ft 2in x 3ft 2in (2.18m x 97cm), was owned first by the Gimson family of furniture makers, then Sir Anthony Denny, who lived at Daneway House in the late 20th century. It has subsequently furnished Priests House, the National Trust-owned property in Muchelney, Somerset.

Estimate £6000-8000.
