The most celebrated examples of their work are Robert Wallace Martin’s grotesque bird sculptures, which may function as tobacco jars or vases, but are quirkily stylised to resemble the human subjects after whom they were modelled.

Waddington’s, in Toronto, will be selling a collection of nearly 100 pieces of Martinware on December 6.

On offer is an intriguing mix of sculpture, objects and pots, along with a remarkable flock of Robert Wallace Martin’s Wally birds which range in estimate from Can$1500-20,000, a selection of which is shown above.
