Ni Rindit, a signed 17 x 11in (44 x 28cm) pastel and pencil work, was created in 1940 when Hofker was in Bali. It had been acquired by a Dutch family in Java soon after, and descended to the vendor based in Taunton.

Offered with an estimate of just £35-45 on November 2, it was secured by a Dutch buyer, bidding via one of four phones on the lot.

Hofker’s oil paintings of Indonesian women, often scantily clad, are the most sought-after of his oeuvre, commanding upwards of £100,000 at auction, while several drawings have made in excess of £50,000.
