Exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the 16 x 21½in (40 x 55cm) oil on panel depicts Beverley’s market place and bandstand, as seen from the 15th century North Bar gate. Elwell painted the work in 1926 from Bar House, his residence at the time.

The auction house said it was purchased against a £5000-8000 estimate by a Beverley resident, who intends to donate the painting to the Beverley Art Gallery in the future.

A prolific artist of portraits, interiors and figurative subjects, Elwell has a solid local collecting base and can command sums in excess of £30,000 for his best interior scenes, or as little as £300 for a continental work.
