Auction houses have also firmly embraced the trend, signalled by recently created sale titles such as Interiors. However, it is worth remembering that more traditional sale formats have long offered a variety of lots.

From an Italian Renaissance sculpture to an installation by Sir Terry Frost, Tennants’ Spring Fine Art Sale on March 24-25 offers an array of works of art spanning five centuries.

According to Tennants, the multidiscipline sale “incorporates fine lots of glass, ceramics, Oriental art, watches, jewellery, silver, decorative art and modern design, pictures, rugs, clocks, works of art and furniture”.

One of the oldest lots is the carved sculpture pictured here: the ivory figure of Christ Crucified dated 1613.

The monogrammed sculpture was made by Giovanni Antonio Gualterio, who was active in Rome from c.1582-1620.

Gualterio specialised in carving ivory crucifixes, and produced works for a distinguished Roman clientele that included Cardinal Ferdinando de Medici. This has been consigned to sale by a private vendor, and is estimated at £4000-6000.

Meanwhile, that Sir Terry Frost (1915- 2003) lot is the highest-estimated item at £40,000-60,000. This impressive assemblage installation by the English abstract artist consists of 31 canvases and eight painted blocks in contrasting red, white and black.
