The signed 23in x 3ft 1in (58 x 94cm) oil on canvas titled Corn Stooks near Loch Carron, sold in a packed saleroom to a private collector for £4400 against a £2000-3000 estimate.

Scenes of cornfields are the Perthshire-born artist’s most sought-after works at auction. In April 2004, Sotheby’s London established a high for the artist when another Loch Carron harvest scene sold at £9000 – a record that stands today.

Elsewhere, a stormy 19th century watercolour of Cove Harbour by prolific Berwickshire artist John Blair (1850-1934) sold to a local buyer, achieving twice its guide at £2900.
