A dedicated sale of Burmantofts faience pottery, billed as the ‘finest and most extensive private collection ever to come to market’, will be offered at Woolley & Wallis on June 22.
The 300-lot sale takes place in Salisbury and will offer a broad range of ceramics made by the Leeds-based Victorian art pottery – from large jardinières to mantel clocks.
Among a group of grotesque animals is this double gourd vase, modelled in relief with a dragon attacking a dragonfly. The 15½in (39.5cm) piece, glazed in a green graduating to aubergine and blue with pink highlights, is estimated at £300-500.

Bovey Pottery figurines depicting famous personalities from the Second World War will be sold by Lawrences of Crewkerne on July 13.
The group comes from the ‘Our Gang’ series, which comprised 19 figures decorated with satin buff-coloured glaze, designed by Gwynneth Holt and the architect Fenton Wyness and produced by the Devon pottery from 1940 until the 1950s.
The 19-lot collection at Lawrences was assembled by a Devon collector over the last 30 years and includes the figures of Stalin, Winston Churchill (shown above) and Theodore Roosevelt.
Estimates range from £50-500.
Richard Winterton’s June 28 sale in Lichfield, Staffordshire, will include this 19th century snuff box in the shape of a pug with a pink collar and a bone between its front paws. Catalogued as Continental, the 3in (8cm) wide enamel and porcelain piece is estimated at £150-250.

More election propaganda – this time from the 1920s – is going under the hammer at Antikbar’s poster sale in London on July 1.
The group includes this example shown above of the Liberal politician and Prime Minister David Lloyd George (1863-1945).
Designed by English illustrator and cartoonist, Leonard Raven-Hill (1863- 1945), it depicts Lloyd George dressed as a clown with a bowl marked Soft Soap and rising bursting bubbles labelled Promises – Bluff, More Promises and Blarny. The label beneath the picture reads I am perpetually blowing bubbles.
The 2ft 6in x 20in (76 x 50cm) poster, referencing John Everett Millais’ famous Victorian painting Bubbles, is estimated at £60-120. For a further preview of this sale, click here.
