This Victorian bosun’s whistle will feature among an array of maritime lots in David Duggleby’s June 17 sale in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Hallmarked for Hilliard and Thomason, Chester 1897, it is estimated at £150-200. With its high pitch, the bosun’s whistle (or the boatswain’s call) was historically used to pass commands to the crew when the voice could not be heard over the sounds of the sea.
This study of a male head in pen and ink, attributed to the English portrait painter George Romney (1734-1802), is included in Bishop & Miller’s sale in Stowmarket, Suffolk, on June 17.
A note written in pencil to the reverse states that the 8 x 5½in (20 x 14cm) work was found in an old sketch book at Whitestock Hall in Lancashire, the home of Romney’s descendants.
