1837 silvered-bronze ballerina after Barre – £4200 at Wotton Auction Rooms.
Catalogued as after Jean-Auguste Barre, the sculpture was titled Marie Taglioni and signed and dated 1837.
Key selling point was that it came from the estate of the English prima ballerina Dame Alicia Markova, who died aged 94 in 2004.
Offered in its wooden box with Dame Alicia’s name inscribed on the top, it was estimated at £800-1200 and sold to an American enthusiast over the phone at £4200.
