Bid to £1650 was a brochure issued in 1906 by CS Rolls. In landscape format and running to 99pp in its original embossed card covers – later bound in vellum and now in a slipcase bearing the Rolls- Royce insignia – it incorporates detailed text and many monochrome images of various coach-built styles available for the 10-50hp models.
Bound runs of early motoring journals included a number featuring The Autocar. Sold at £4800 was a lot offering the first 166 issues from the years 1895-98, uniformly bound as five small quarto volumes in three-quarter green leather and cloth.
Other runs of Autocar in publisher’s green cloth gilt bindings included those for the years 1911-14 at £2500 and another for the years 1915-18, again bound as eight volumes, at £2800.
Bid to £7500 was a 22-volume, complete run of The Automotor Journal from October 1896 – when it was called The Automotor & Horseless Vehicle Journal – to December 1910. The issues in each volume are bound without covers but with title-pages and indices at the front.
Among the books, one of only 200 privately printed copies of WK Vanderbilt’s The Log of my Motor of 1908 sold at £2500. This photographically illustrated work records the author’s tours in Europe and his racing successes in the years 1899-1908 in a variety of cars.
A follow-up record in red cloth gilt of Vanderbilt’s 1908-11 motoring adventures, again thought to have been limited to 200 copies, made £1450.
