The ‘Industrial Exhibition of All Nations’ jigsaw type game shown here, originally bought at the Great Exhibition of 1851, sold for £1350 at Lawrences.
Contained in the wooden box with its sliding, colour printed cover, it contains 60 wooden blocks that make up two different pictures, which also feature on two folding, linen-backed litho key prints.
In the same section of the Crewkerne sale, a set of 64 picture dominoes, of German manufacture and dated to c.1840, made £700.
Bid to £1150 rather than a suggested £50-60 was a set of 12 ‘Cartes Mimiques’, each with a moveable upper, or head part, in the original box. Paris, c.1820, was offered as a possible origin – perhaps inspired by a set of 16 such cards of the same name in the V&A collections.
