The inscription in Latin (widely understood by the elite in medieval Europe) reads Amieenm St Ma Viebel Egie V.

It was found in 2015 on land in North Cave, East Riding of Yorkshire, that was owned in the Middle Ages by the Metham family and came for sale at Dee Atkinson & Harrison (15% buyer’s premium) in Driffield on May 12 together with a coroner’s report and treasure number.

It was bought at £1700 (estimate £1000-1500) by a local man in the room against a collector in Paris bidding on the phone.
