In some cases makers have clearly made every effort to provide their clients with a weapon that will shoot exactly where it is aimed. Others have tried to give their clients every chance in a tight corner with intimidating blunderbuss barrels.
Unusual examples have provided a plan B in the form of spring bayonets or, in the case of the wheelock (no9), a battleaxe.
Some weapons fall between two stools. The Clanricarde system pistol (no7) is fitted with a shoulder stock for maximum accuracy, while it is clearly designed to spray misshapen projectiles over the widest possible area.
