A RARE pair of Arts & Crafts terracotta planters attributed to the Compton Pottery will be for sale at the latest Style 1900 20th Century Decorative Arts Fair, the next fair in the series to be launched.

The event takes place at the stylish Art Deco masterpiece that is the Grade I-listed De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, on Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29.

Arts & Crafts and Art Deco dealer Bill Jones of Style 1900, organiser of the fair, who has priced the pair at £2650, says: “These Compton Arts & Crafts terracotta planters in the Snake pattern are a rare pair, and will be the first time offered to market since they were bought at auction 47 years ago.

One is in perfect condition while the other has some stabilised damage.” Among the 28 dealers standing at the new fair will be Deco Dave, aka Dave Hornik-Unger, with lighting, while Shine on Deco and Eley Antiques are selling Deco and Arts & Crafts furniture. Norman Ridley of Simply Decorous and the well-known vintage designer and jewellery specialist Hilary Conquy will doubtless be a draw for collectors of Deco adornments.

Jones is such a fan of the Art Deco and Arts & Crafts movements that he is launching a series of fairs in buildings from those periods and with these styles at their heart.

He told ATG when he started the events: “It’s my intention to stage a couple of two-day fairs in each location each year.”

The first was in mid-February at Voewood, a Grade I-Listed Arts & Crafts mansion on the outskirts of Holt in north Norfolk. The next Voewood event is in October.

Jones will be very familiar with the Bexhill venue – Style 1900 is his decorative arts shop in the town. He also runs Grand Designs nearby in St Leonards-on-Sea.
