Classic examples include Sheila Fell at Mitchells of Cumbria, Robert Lenkiewicz at Plymouth Auction Rooms and Kyffin Williams at Rogers Jones in north Wales.

Meanwhile, a collection of work from the studio of a “noted local painter of Somerset and Dorset subjects” is coming up for sale at Lawrences of Crewkerne on January 20.

The pictures are by Ron Jesty (1926-2016). He trained to be a draughtsman and graphic designer and worked in that field for over 30 years.

Jesty pursued painting in watercolour as a hobby but took it up full-time in 1978 at the age of 52, becoming a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1982. He worked principally in Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.

He taught at the College of Art in Yeovil, near to Crewkerne. “He found teaching there to be a pleasurable sideline and stressed the importance of rigorous method and good fundamental skills to his students,” says Lawrences’ specialist Richard Kay.

The selection on offer comprises 25 lots, including individual framed works as well as folios of unframed sketches. One lot even contains sketches, his easel, a pot of his brushes and a wad of press cuttings (estimate £100-200).
