Dated September 24, 1658, Monck, who was head of the army north of the border, mentions the recent death of Oliver Cromwell and pledges his loyalty to Cromwell’s other surviving son Richard as Lord Protector.
Monck in fact used the prestige gained from his victories against the Dutch to intrigue in favour of the restoration of the Stuarts. Charles II rewarded him with a dukedom.
Estimated at up to £500, this well-preserved note between two key figures of the Interregnum sold at £2500 (plus 21.5% premium).
