The half-day event, being held in County Hall in Westminster, is a practical workshop on the current law around buying and selling art and antiques with CITES-protected materials.
Representatives from many of the UK’s regional and London auction houses and dealers, trade bodies, lawyers, shippers and other supply-side firms have registered to attend.
The speaker line-up features CITES experts including police officers and lawyers, and trade association leaders.
“Timed ahead of the consultation on new government rules on proof of age, and with an emphasis on the practical side of trading legitimately in CITES materials, this event has been designed with practitioners in mind, ” said Noelle McElhatton, ATG editor.
“The seminar is about the ‘how’ not the ‘why’ and delegates will be given lots of opportunity to ask questions of the expert speakers.”
ATG is partnering with trade bodies SOFAA and the BADA to host the seminar. Sessions are to be held in confidence under ‘Chatham House Rules’ – that is, there will be no reporting of attributed remarks by speakers or delegates – to encourage open discussion and sharing of experiences.
Rebecca Davies, chief executive of LAPADA and a seminar panellist, said the event’s confidentiality was an important feature. “Practitioners need help to navigate the complexities of CITES rules and to seek that expertise in a professional, private setting, ” she said.
