In 1903-04 he had accompanied Sir Francis Younghusband’s controversial Tibet Mission – effectively a military invasion of that country.
Seen here is a view of the Paro Taksang monastery in Bhutan, its buildings clinging dramatically to mountain side and from whence the road, or path descends into an almost impassable gorge via steps cut perilously into the rock. It sold for £32,000.
