Children Playing by the Shore, a 2ft 8in x 2ft 9in (82 x 84cm) oil on canvas, is characteristic of the artist’s best-known works, capturing the joy of childhood days by the seaside.
Like many of her paintings, it bears no date, but probably depicts one of Sharp’s two favourite costal locations: St Ives where she stayed twice a year from 1924 onwards with her life-long companion, fellow artist Marcella Smith, or, more probably, Bosham near Chichester.
Estimate £60,0000-80,000.
