His Second World War honours and others are estimated at £1000-1500 in the Charterhouse sale on March 17. Mason, who had served in India in The Royal Artillery, was taken as a POW during the war. In 1951 he enrolled as a Yeoman Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London – aka the famous Beefeaters – a position he held until 1972.

The medals and a range of formal military photographs, letters and ephemera all relating to Mason are consigned from his family, who live in Kent.

Auction house director Richard Bromell says: “Mason was not only awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, but also a Military Medal for bravery in the field.”
