This eggshell porcelain three-piece clock garniture, right, decorated with iris blooms and leafy tendrils, carried a full set of marks including the artist’s monogram for Sam Schelling (1876-1958).

He worked as a decorator for Rozenburg from 1892 until bankruptcy in 1914, overseeing some of the firm’s most admired designs in the Art Nouveau idiom.

Unlike the factory’s more robust wares in pottery, Rozenburg’s medal-winning porcelain was so delicate as to be beyond use. Damage and imperfections must be tolerated and in this case all three pieces were cracked or chipped.

Nonetheless a number of bidders were keen to secure it with an online bidder proving successful at £4800.
