Kept at the family’s historic Tillypronie estate in Scotland, the collection has been billed by Christie’s as the ‘finest collection of sporting and ornithological art to come to the market in over 20 years’.

Leading the way are some 60 ornithological watercolours by the renowned painter Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935), bought by the family on the advice of Aylmer Tryon of the eponymous London sporting art gallery.

Highlights include Blackgame in the glen, a 2ft 6in x 22in (76 x 55cm) pencil and watercolour from 1911, which is estimated at £70,000-100,000.

The single-owner sale also includes sculpture, furniture and decorative arts, and will be offered at Christie’s in King Street on December 15.
