The artist, whose work has performed well on the secondary market over the last decade, painted still-lifes and landscapes in a vivid Impressionist style.

He studied at Westminster School of Art before the outbreak of the Second World War, but did not devote himself to painting until he retired from the city in 1979.

Blue Scarf, an 18 x 20in (45 x 50cm) oil on canvas, is signed and bears the paperwork to the verso for the Parkin Gallery in London.

Estimated at an attractive £250-350, it sold for £880.

Another good price for the artist was paid at Cheffins in May for a Côtes de Provence scene, which nearly doubled its guide to sell for £1800.
