Dawson’s, which launched last year, is collaborating with TV presenter and 20th century design expert, Mark Hill. Together they plan to tap into the market by holding biannual auctions of modern and contemporary design.
A stand-out lot in the inaugural sale is this limited-edition sculpture by Lorenzo Quinn (b.1966), an Italian sculptor whose monumental work on the impact of climate change has been drawing crowds during this year’s Venice Biennale.
Titled Decisions, the 2001 work shows a naked bronze man standing before a railway track made from iron and wood, which twists into opposing directions.
The work stands on a 3ft (92cm) high stand, and is numbered five in an edition of nine. It was acquired from London’s Halcyon Gallery in January 2002, and is estimated in the sale at £5000-7000.
Other highlights include a 1930s, etched clear vase by Daum (£500-700), a unique Erik Reiff (1923-2006) 1970s Royal Copenhagen stoneware moon flask (£2500-3000), and a 1970s Czech Majak Jablonec yellow cast glass owl sculpture (£150-200).
