Rountree Tryon Galleries is offering a coloured chalk en plein air drawing of the Somme by Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979).

Sketched at the village of Thiepval, the 11¾ x 18in (30 x 46cm) work depicts a lone soldier positioned among the ruins and barbed wire, surveying the frozen landscape.

Maze, who worked with the British Army as an interpreter and military draughtsman, probably sketched this in the winter of early 1917.

Thiepval had been completely destroyed the previous year, during the Somme offensive. Today, the Thiepval Memorial remembers the 72,246 missing British and South African servicemen who died in the battles of the Somme, with no known grave.

It is priced at £4500.
