‘Pasties straight from the oven’ gouache by Heather Bray sold for £500 against a £100-150 estimate at David Lay.
The sell-out Bray collection comprised colourful abstract landscapes of the Cornish coast by Barrie Bray, his wife Heather, and their late daughter Lucie, an en plein air painter who died aged 39 in 2014.
“These pictures were all so fashionable, in the style of Ben Nicholson’s landscapes, and that was their strong appeal,” said auctioneer David Lay.
Private buyers, some new to bidding at auction, came from beyond Cornwall to absorb much of the collection.
The signed 9½ x 12½in (24 x 32cm) gouache titled Pasties straight from the oven by Heather Bray was among the most eagerly contested, selling for £500 against a £100-150 estimate.
