A pair of portraits with a distinguished provenance to the Earls of Carlisle at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire star in Lawrences of Crewkerne’s April 7 sale in Somerset.

Depicting the 3rd and 5th Earls, the duo was gifted to the vendor’s father by Geoffrey Howard, the 5th Earl’s son. The recipient was a kinsman and direct descendant of the 9th Earl, George James Howard (1843-1911).

Shown here is the 5th Earl, Frederick Howard (1748-1825). Estimated at £2500-4000, the 2ft 5in x 2ft (75 x 62cm) oil on canvas is a copy of Joshua Reynolds’ painting of 1767, which resides in a private collection. The second portrait is of Charles Howard, 3rd Earl, by the circle of William Aikman (1682-1731).
