Which is to say, it shows the backs of paintings by four Milanese avant-garde artists who worked in the 1950s and ‘60s.
Each artist has a painting suspended from the ceiling above plinths, allowing a 360-degree view of the work in a style used by at least two major institutions in recent times. As well as Vik Muniz: Verso, which the Mauritshuis held in 2016, there is the ongoing show Michelangelo/ Sebastiano at London’s National Gallery.
The artists featured are Lucio Fontana, Paolo Scheggi, Agostino Bonalumi and Enrico Castellani. Extra to their featured works are 20 by the same four artists that will be exhibited on the walls of the gallery and prices at the show range from £250,000 and £7m.
An image of the back of a Fontana work has never been published, so for many visitors this will be a singular chance to examine his perforated canvases.
Tornabuoni is named after the street in Florence where it was founded in 1981 and as well as being a commercial gallery also has a permanent collection of Italian art of the Novecento. The Mayfair gallery where Recto/Verso takes place was founded in 2015.
