This typical Victorian oil of boats on choppy seas, titled Shipping off Whitby, signed and dated 1874, provided the highpoint of David Duggleby’s (21% buyer’s premium) sale in Scarborough on March 17. With a provenance to the Omell Galleries of Bury Street in St James’s, it sold at £4300.

Initialled and dated 1879, a 10 x 15in (26 x 37cm) watercolour view of The Harbour and East Cliff Whitby looking towards the Abbey by Mary Weatherill (1834-1913) sold at £1650. Mary was the eldest daughter of Whitby artist George Weatherill and worked in a similar vein.
