1. Antarctic menu

A ‘Midwinter menu’ printed during Ernest Shackleton's British Antarctic Expedition (the 1907-09 Nimrod expedition) will be offered by Golding Young & Mawer auction on January 3.

The menu marks a fictitious feast included penguin patties, seal cutlets and roast reindeer and comes from an archive of related items from an anonymous local vendor and will be offered in six lots with an estimated total value in the region of £10,000-15,000 at the Grantham auction.

2. Charge of the Light Brigade officer’s sword

This sword was presented to Major Soame Cambier Jenyns, a senior officer who survived the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. It is estimated at £400-800.

This sword was presented to Major Soame Cambier Jenyns, a senior officer who survived the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. It was given to Jenyns by parishioners from the village of Bottisham where he lived and will be offered for sale at local Cambridge saleroom Willingham Auctions on January 5.

During the battle, Jenyns was left in command of the 13th Light Dragoons after his superiors were killed. It is estimated at £400-800. The sale can be viewed at thesaleroom.com.

3. Una and the Lion 5 Pounds

The enchanting Una and the Lion 5 Pounds is known as one of the “most beautiful coins ever produced”. Designed by William Wyon in 1839, it was commissioned to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign (in 1837). The depiction of the young queen as Lady Una is the first occasion when a British monarch had been depicted on a coin as a fictional character. Lady Una is a character from Edmund Spenser’s poem the Faerie Queene from 1590. It is  estimated at $150,000-200,000 at Heritage Auctions’ NYINC World Coins Signature Auction sale in New York on January 6-7.
