The 18th century Tibetan model of Gantama buddha had been consigned to Mallams and given an estimate of £200-300 ahead of the October 30-31 sale.

The 6.25in (16cm) high figure, depicted on a lotus base with impressed dorje (sceptre) symbol, helped Mallams reach a hammer total of just over £442,000 and average £700 per lot at its two-day Asian Art auction.

Other highlights were four 18th century rhinoceros libation cups, from a vendor who had inherited them from his father, which totalled £99,000.

A 19th or early 20th century Chinese porcelain bowl, decorated in famille rose enamels with daoist symbolic emblems, sold at £10,500 against a £100-200 estimate. The 2.5 x 4.25in (6cm x 10.5cm) bowl has a six character Zhuanshu seal mark of Qianlong on the bottom of the bowl and came with a similar similar bowl with Daoguang mark.
