1. Japanese cloisonné vase and cover
A 19th century vase and cover decorated in cloisonné enamel by Namikawa Yasuyuki to be offered at Hannam’s of Selborne.
The art of Japanese cloisonné enamelling developed quickly during the Meiji era, when technological improvements were introduced from the West.
Among the cloisonné artists who flourished during this period was Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927), founder of a successful workshop in Kyoto. Yasuyuki’s skill lay in the way he sculpted the wires into different shapes and widths.
This late 19th century vase and cover decorated in cloisonné enamel by Yasuyuki will go under the hammer in a three-day sale at Hampshire saleroom Hannam’s of Selborne from January 7-9. 2. Wedgwood glass candlesticks
Five pan top 'Cromer' candlesticks designed by Ronald Stennett-Wilson of King’s Lynn Glass for Wedgwood will be offered at Special Auction Services on January 8.
Ronald Stennett-Wilson was a prominent post-war glass designer when he established King’s Lynn Glass in 1967, later selling the firm to Wedgwood. He was influenced by Scandinavian design and produced vases, goblets and paperweights. This lot of five pan top 'Cromer' candlesticks consisting of one each in amethyst, dark blue, topaz and green at 6in (14.5cm) high, and a green and a blue at 8in (21cm) high are estimated at £120-180 at Special Auction Services on January 8.
The auctioneer notes that in Susan Tobin's book, Wedgwood Glass, green was not a production colour used for the Cromer range. These two green examples could be either colour trials or a novelty (friggers) and therefore are possibly very rare. For details of the lot visit thesaleroom.com.
3. Pietra dura table top
A mid-19th century Italian specimen marble and micromosaic Grand Tour table top once owned by actor and writer Sir Dirk Bogarde (1921-99) will be offered at Woolley & Wallis on January 9.
In the January 9 Furniture, Works of Art and Clocks auction, Woolley & Wallis will offer a mid-19th century Italian specimen marble and micromosaic Grand Tour table top once owned by actor and writer Dirk Bogarde (1921-99). The table was used in Bogarde’s Sussex house Nore in the 1960s and was moved to all his subsequent homes, including Clermont in Provence, France, where he lived from 1970-86. 4. Zulu shield
A 1870s Isihlangu, an early example of the large war shield used by the Zulu warriors during the Anglo-Zulu wars, will be offered at C&T Auctioneers on January 9.
Relics from the hard-fought defence of Rorke’s Drift in the Zulu War are among the lots for sale in a Kent auction as part of an extensive collection from the period. 5. First World War photograph album
Also on January 9, Mellors & Kirk in Nottingham is offering this photograph album from the First World War of German prisoners of war in Malta. The 25 postcard-sized silver prints have been placed in an album called Photo-Bilder von Austellungs-Arbeiten der Kriegsgefangenen auf Malta.
