Among the interesting vintage shotguns due to feature in Gavin Gardiner’s annual sale of sporting guns at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland today (August 26) will be a 12-bore pinfire hammer gun by Stephen Grant c.1869.
Pinfire was an early form of cartridge which incorporated its own firing pin. This concept was superseded by the conventional cartridge with a central primer and it is unusual to find good examples in shootable condition today. It is estimated at £1200-1800.

The 2ft (60cm) work is similar to Emmanuel Frémiet’s (1824-1910) sculpture Chatte et ses petits which was exhibited at the 1849 Paris Salon and the International Exhibition in London in 1862. It comes from the family of Adelaide-born Colonel Arthur Waite (1894-1991) who married Irene Austin, the daughter of Herbert Austin (Austin Motor Company).
Col Waite, who had served at Gallipoli, won motor-racing events at Brooklands and Monza. In Australia his Austin 7 completed the 100-mile road race which then became the 1928 Australian Grand Prix, which Waite also won.

This early edition of RW Mylne’s Geological Map of London and its Environs published by Edward Stanford of London in 1858 carries an estimate of £300-500 at Forum Auctions on August 29.

The 16in x 2ft 2in (41 x 67cm) geological cross section runs from Hendon to East Wickham. This scarce early edition mounted on linen, folding with marbled ends into gilt cloth boards, carries an estimate of £300-500 at Forum Auctions of London on August 29.

4. Dufy's Le Moulin de la Galette
AB Levy in Florida will offer this Jean Dufy (1888-1964) picture at its Palm Beach jewellery, art and antiques auction on August 29.
The Paris restaurant Le Moulin de la Galette has been painted by artists including Renoir, van Gogh and Pissarro. Dufy painted this version of Le Moulin de la Galette in gouache and watercolour on paper laid down on canvas and the 19in x 2ft 1in (48.5 x 64cm) picture is included in the second volume of the Dufy catalogue raisonné by Jacques Bailly.
It is estimated at $30,000-50,000.
5. Studio pottery baluster vase
A large studio pottery baluster vase with Ten Moku glaze by Ray Finch with a provenance to Peter Dingley Gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon is estimated at £80-100 in Keys’ auction on August 31.
On August 31, Keys of Aylsham, Norfolk, will sell the principal contents of a flat in Hampstead, north London. It includes a collection of studio ceramics and modern art mainly purchased in the 1970s from the Peter Dingley Gallery in Stratford-upon-Avon.
This Peter Hayes (b.1946) Ragu vase of flattened form with an incised design and artist’s stamp to base, 8in (20cm) high is estimated at £100-150.
