Offered by fair organiser James Manning for £13,700, it sold to a private UK collector.
The picture shows the gothic revival villa in Twickenham built by Horace Walpole – the building that inspired Walpole’s melancholic gothic novel The Castle of Otranto.
Trevelyan’s picture, dated 1988, reflects the sense of brooding drama despite his classic vivid palette. Although it had been painted as a commission, his wife, fellow artist Mary Fedden, was so enamoured with the work that she could not bear to part with it. Instead, she painted a replacement for the client John Iddon (a friend of the artist and, by coincidence, another dealer at the Connect fair).
Connect hosted more than 30 dealers at London’s Mall Galleries.
Trevelyan is the current subject of an exhibition at Pallant House in Chichester (until February 10).
A separate exhibition at Strawberry Hill House in Richmond, Lost Treasures of Strawberry Hill: Masterpieces from Horace Walpole’s Collection, continues until February 24.
