While he also appeared in numerous other television series including Warship, Rock Follies and The Voyage of Charles Darwin, as well as playing the lead role in Legends of King Arthur, Burt also had a secret passion for collecting Modern art – an interest of which only his closest friends were aware.
His collection focused in particular on the works of Michael Ayrton (1921-75) and John Milne (1932-1978).
Following Burt’s death at the age of 73 last year, his collection of paintings and bronze sculptures has been consigned for sale at the Swan Fine Art auction in Tetsworth, Oxfordshire, on September 3.
One of the potential highlights is this bronze by Ayrton, from an edition of six, titled Daedalus Wingmaker, 1960, 18 x 22 x 15in (46 x 56 x 38cm) overall. It is estimated at £10,000-15,000.
Two further highlights appear below.
