The sale, operated by auction house Victor Mee, will include furniture, decorative art and garden pieces from Lyle-Smith’s former home as well as lots from the Bishop’s Palace.
Lyle-Smyth, a painter, sculptor and photographer, spent a lot of time in England but later lived in the c.1800 Oak Park House in Letterkenny, County Donegal.
In 1912 she joined the Pioneer Players feminist Theatre Company and the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), which led her to join the East London Federation Suffragettes, run by prominent Suffragette activist Sylvia Pankhurst.
The auction location, the Bishop’s Palace was built c.1835-37 in the Grecian Revival style by Bishop George Beresford, with the design attributed to Dublin-based architect William Ferrell. The See House was lived in and enjoyed by several Irish bishops and their families until 2000, when it was bought privately.
Victor Mee will hold the sale on September 30.
