Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art specialist Thomas Bompard will relocate from London to Los Angeles to become chairman of Sotheby’s West Coast, and senior specialist in its fine art division. He will work with Amy Cappellazzo, chairman of Sotheby’s fine art division. She said: “The collecting community in Los Angeles has reached a level of power and sophistication that demands senior expertise on the ground to work with clients every day.”
Bompard began his career in 2001 in the books and manuscripts department at Sotheby’s in Paris and by 2008 had moved to the Impressionist & Modern art department, becoming head of department in 2011. After taking a year to work as an independent dealer, he returned to Sotheby’s in 2015, joining the Impressionist & Modern Art department in London.
Winter Antiques Show hire
The Winter Antiques Show has hired a new executive director to replace long-time executive director Catherine Sweeney Singer. Helen Allen has experience of working for art fairs in marketing and communication and was previously executive director of Ramsay Fairs. While at Ramsay, where she worked for nine years, she was executive director of PULSE Contemporary Art Fair with events in New York, Miami and London. As a consultant she worked on the launch of Art Hong Kong (now Art Basel Hong Kong). Allen previously worked with Christie’s in Rome and New York and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
John Bly offers advice
Antiques dealer John Bly has teamed up with advice service Where To Sell.
The Aylesbury firm provides a free service to advise on the best places to sell items.
Mike Smith, creator of Where To Sell, said: "He has a long and distinguished career in antiques, with several years at Sotheby’s before joining the family business, which had been started by his great grandfather. He is very well respected, so we very much appreciate his involvement.”

LSK hire new jewellery specialist
Jewellery specialist Angela Marshall has left Cheffins in Cambridge to join Bury St Edmunds auctioneer Lacy Scott & Knight (LSK).
A member of The Society of Jewellery Historians, Fellow of the Gemmological Association, and a Diamond Fellow of the Gemmological Association, she was at Cheffins for seven years. LSK added three affordable jewellery and watches auctions last year. Ed Crichton, partner at LSK, said “We are confident that Angela will prove to be a valuable member of the team and help to strengthen the jewellery and watches auctions position within our expanding sales calendar”.
Last week Cheffins announced it has appointed Steven Collins as head of jewellery, silver and watches.
