A series of five alabaster portraits, which show the artist covering and distorting her face, will greet visitors at the entrance the of the Chelsea fair (June 28-July 4).
“At this point of my life, facing mortality, I hence decided to capture my performance in a more permanent material than just film and photography,” Abramović says. “I chose alabaster based on its history and properties.”
Titled Five Stages of Maya Dance, the work is the result of her experimentation at the Madrid workshop Factum Arte where she collaborated with photographers, engineers and electricians to produce the finished work.
It represents the second edition of Masterpiece Presents, an exhibition of recent innovative and immersive art in a large space in the fair. Last year’s inaugural edition featured Ivan Navarro’s Impenetrable Room, a series of green light installations commissioned by Paul Kasmin Gallery.
This year the feature is a joint presentation by returning Masterpiece exhibitor Factum Arte and Lisson Gallery. The portraits are available to purchase from the dealership as a set.
