After operating in the country for 40 years, the size of the new office in the historic old town will enable Sotheby’s to host more auctions, including mid-season sales, as well as exhibitions, lectures, courses and evening events.
Caroline Lang, co-chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland said the new offices will give the auctioneer the “opportunity to do more for the many great collectors who live here and to diversify in the region.”
Sotheby’s Switzerland operates in Geneva and Zurich and has a consultant based in Lugano.
The four storey building in Geneva, created in 1920-21 by architect Marc Camoletti, is at 2 Rue François Diday and officially opened this month. Camoletti also designed Geneva’s the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire.
Sotheby’s Geneva, which was previously based at 13 quai du Mont Blanc, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a series of events. Known for its sales of jewellery and watches, Sotheby’s Switzerland sourced 60% of all the company’s European consignments.
David Bennett, co-chairman of Sotheby’s Switzerland and worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s international jewellery division said: “As Sotheby’s jewellery sales go from strength to strength, now is the perfect time for us to expand our plans for the region.”
