A rare German view, Turner’s Ehrenbreitstein will be offered with an estimate of £15m-25m.

Ehrenbreitstein, or The Bright Stone of Honour and the Tomb of Marceau, (1835) relates to a subject from Byron’s Childe Harold. It depicts the ruined fortress of Ehrenbreitstein near Coblenz.

The picture is a late work that specialists regard as the artist’s best period.

Sotheby’s said the painting is one of only a few of this importance and quality remaining in private ownership.

The painting will be offered at Sotheby’s Old Masters Evening sale tomorrow (July 5). The sale will also include works by Canaletto, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Annibale Carracci.

Also tomorrow, Christie’s is offering Turner’s Norham Castle, Sunrise. The pencil and watercolour which measures 20 x 29 in (51.7 x 74.4 cm) carries an estimate of £500,000-800,000 at Christie’s Old Master drawings and watercolours sale on July 5, part of its Classic Week event.
