The book is brought by Peter Harrington Rare Books and is number 29 of 200 of the first illustrated editions produced. It is signed by Scottish author Kenneth Grahame and the illustrator Ernest Shepard. The two men met in 1931 when Shepard, who today is well-known for his illustrations of the Winnie the Pooh series, visited Grahame in Edinburgh.

“I love these little people, be kind to them,” Grahame said.

The first edition was published with only a frontispiece illustration and Shepard’s contributions quickly made the new edition the more popular of the two.

It is offered on the stand of Peter Harrington for £9500.
