The 454 lots that furnished and decorated the artist’s London home ranged from Isnik pottery, Oriental carpets and Indian miniatures to European Old Masters, and works by his artistic contemporaries to examples of Hodgkin’s own paintings.

Topping the bill at a hammer price of £920,000 (£1.12m inc. premium) was a painting by his long-standing friend Bhupen Khakhar. De-Luxe Tailors, a 3ft 6in x 2ft 9in (1m x 83cm) oil on canvas executed in 1972, a gift to Hodgkin from the Indian artist, quadrupled expectations to set a new auction record for Khakhar, far surpassing the premium inclusive £434,500 paid in 2014 for his painting Night.

Other highlights included Sweet Bowl, a 22in x 3ft  (56x91.5cm) oil on board by Patrick Caulfield from 1966 which sold for £430,000 hammer.

The most expensive of Hodgkin’s own paintings in the sale was Bedroom, an oil on canvas from 1960-61 depicting the artist himself together with his wife Julia and friend Mrs Burt seated in a Parisian hotel. The 3ft 6in x 4ft 2in (1x1.3m) painting signed H. Hodgkin, titled and dated, realised £200,000.
