The drape-back chairs, each 2ft 10in (86cm) high, date from c. 1825 and were offered by Walton House Antiques for £1850. Originally from a stately home in Scotland, they will now be used in the staff room of a private girl's school in London.

Furniture also sold well from the stand of Wilsons Antiques. There, a Victorian burr walnut dining table, a late Victorian satinwood inlaid Pembroke table and a French carved mahogany armchair all found new homes during the three-day fair.

Around 30 dealers stood at the event, which ran from October 6-8. The annual event takes place at the Sandown Park Racecourse under the direction of the Antiques Dealers Fair Limited (ADFL).

The organisers described sales this year as ‘the curate’s egg – good in parts’. Among the strongest performing was Catherine Hunt Oriental Antiques, which made a five-figure sale within the first hour of the fair and had a steady stream of buyers throughout the following days.

“We continue to find the fair comparing very favourably with the larger London fairs,” said 10-year fair veteran Margaret Cowley of Garrett and Hurst, which sold three sculptures priced between £4000-10,000. “It’s a fair where we meet new clients and we still have some potential after-sales on the go.”
