Vincent Clegg, 53, from Romford, denies the charges that relate to burglaries in Cyncoed, Cardiff (November 2012), a property in the Cotswolds (May 2010) and at Forthampton Court in Gloucestershire in 2005.

Clegg sold property from the thefts, including gold boxes and portrait miniatures, at Portobello Market and consigned others to auction houses including Bonhams, Fellows, Sworders and Woolley & Wallis, claiming to be the lawful owner.

He accepts handling stolen items but states he did not realise their history until he was notified by police.

Opening the case, prosecutor John Ryan said: “The issue is whether he acted dishonestly – whether he knew or believed those goods to be stolen.” The trial continues.
