Bonhams have teamed up with Chichester’s Pallant House Gallery to show the works which will be on display at their New Bond Street home between October 2 and 11.

The exhibition, timed to coincide with Frieze London, includes works by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Richard Hamilton.

The Colony Room was founded in 1948 in Soho by Muriel Belcher and became a magnet for artists, musicians and writers.

Regulars included Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, Dylan Thomas, Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach.

Works featuring in the exhibition include Lucian Freud’s Self-Portrait with Hyacinth in Pot and Michael Andrews’ Colony Room I from 1962, which captures the atmosphere of a typical evening in the club.

Gareth Williams, Bonhams director of Post-War and Contemporary art, said: “We wanted to share Pallant House Gallery’s collection with a wide audience and their fantastic painting by Michael Andrews of the Colony Room and its key figures made a great focal point from which to build the exhibition.”

"Uninhibited and unjudged, celebrated and loved"

Even after Belcher’s death in 1979, The Colony Room retained its popularity, attracting a new crowd of artists and celebrities. The Young British Artists held court there with Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas among the regulars.

Writer Sophie Parkin has written about the upcoming exhibition and is author of The Colony Room Club 1948-2008. She said: “Throughout its 60 years, The Colony Room remained the one place in the West End where you could feel uninhibited and unjudged, celebrated and loved.”
